...You know that saying about how the common denominator of all your dysfunctional relationships is you? You ever wonder if it's actually not you and for some reason you've just had the hilariously bad luck of losing on the cosmic dice roll, so everyone around you is a jackass?

You know, I don't think I've kept enough close relationships, dysfunctional or otherwise, to really consider it.

At the same time, that's probably because my luck with the cosmic dice roll hasn't always been the best, if we're looking at it that way.

Better to just ditch the assholes before they ever become your clinging jackass barnacles, right?

Let's say I was born into a very specific social group, as that's probably the nicest way to put it. I don't get along with most within that group for various reasons, and interacting with those outside of it is strongly discouraged where I'm from.

I had a 50/50 chance of being right. Looks like the cosmic dice didn't go in my favor again.

If memory serves, you were also born into a social group that didn't believe in giving little kids ice cream. I can see why you wouldn't get along with them.

They have their reasons for being as they are.

Me? I started out from modest roots. Charming average family, the kind of grandmother who'd stand in the kitchen door in an apron shaking her wooden spoon at you for fucking around too much on the fence rails around her yard.

Going to an elite school threw me in with a specific social group of my own, and now I hang out with diplomats. Not a bad trade-off, really.

You sound as though you've done quite well for yourself; it makes me wonder what has you pondering the cosmic lottery at two in the morning.

You never did ask why I'm sitting in a tree, either.

Well, that's because I have a tendency to end up in places I shouldn't be, most of them high off the ground, simply on whims.
