Nothing worth writing home about. I've been in this place a year and a handful of extra days now, and that was fine up until it hit me how long it's been since the last time I saw someone I know.

Will it be better or worse for you, if he shows up then?

Better, hands-down. At least then even if he bails I get to start my "days since That Guy" counter over at zero again.

There are a few of them in particular that I would like; two are practically family, and one is...

...Well, he's a teenage boy who tries very hard, and I think that says about all that needs to be said about how well I think he can handle himself.

In other words, you let him do his thing most of the time and then check in every once in a while to make sure he's not playing in traffic?

Or aggressively leaping into it, because everything is a tragedy when you're fifteen.

Too young to set loose on the world, too old to stuff into a carseat for toddlers.

That's exactly it.

At the very least this one respects me, which I understand to be something of a miracle given his age.

How'd you end up with him? Was he left in a basket on your doorstep?

Something like that. The rest of his family died several years ago, and he came to stay with us shortly after; I was a bit too young to be given all the details at the time, I just know it was unfortunate.

He's technically my personal servant now, though I've always considered him more of a companion and tend to treat him as such. Partially because I enjoy his company, partially because he takes the entire business so seriously that I'm convinced he'd walk into a lake and drown himself if I told him to.

Oh, believe me, I plan on it.

Just the same, while I know how time works here and as such I also know there's no way he could have burned anything down in my absence, it would be nice to verify for myself that he's managed to keep himself in one piece.
